Long Term Review of the John Deere 1585 – Full Review – 1500 Series Terrain Cut

You are probably watching this because either you are curious about one of the most expensive lawn mowers you can buy, or you are seriously considering it because you want a mower with 0 turn capabilities, but with a cab and AWD. Very few mowers meet the latter, and that is how I ended up with the JD 1585.

I have owned the John Deere 1585 for 5 years now. I have posted many videos of it brooming and snow blowing, but haven’t shown it mowing or gone into great detail on the machine itself.

I received some requests to give a thorough review of the machine and post a video, so here it is.

Let me start by saying I really like this machine and I will always have a front mount mower going forward. They are just so versatile and meet all of my needs. They are great mowers, and they are easier to use and more effective at plowing residential driveways and sidewalks than my skid steer.

The 1500 series is at the top end of the mowers John Deere. The 1585 I have has almost all the options you can get and cost over $30k new, just for the machine itself. The mower deck was $3,700, the snow thrower was $3,156, and the broom was about $3,700. Needless to say, this is one expensive lawn mower so if you get one, you will probably have pretty high expectations.

In this video I go through the machine in detail and point out all the things I like and don’t like about it.

The main cons are:

-Dust infiltrates the cabin easily

-The front of the mower and engine area trap grass clippings and are hard to clean

-The cabin is very noisy, you need to wear hearing protection

-Attachments, in particular the mower deck, are really hard to switch

-Price

The main pros are:

-Reliability

-Power

-AWD

-Mowing with a cab is amazing, if you like to stay cool and don’t like bugs

-The front mount design allows for zero turning, brush mowing, mowing over edges, and accommodates many different attachments

-This is an awesome winter machine for snow removal (see my other videos)

Main Conclusion: I would buy one again, but I would definitely check out other manufacturers to see if they do the cons better. Also, I would get a side discharge mower deck to go with it. Enjoy the video and please comment if you have any advice or questions! driftlessinwi

How to Change Attachments on the John Deere 1500 Series (applies to the 1400 Series too)

Winter is coming! After a video showing how the JD 1585 broom works, I wanted to change over to the JD 60″ snow thrower to show how easy it is to do, and because we are expecting a big winter storm with over 7 inches of snow. Changing attachments on the 1585 is not nearly as easy as it should be. John Deere could make a lot of improvements to help smooth the process. To see how I do it check out the video and please like and leave a comment if you have any tips you use. The process is probably the same on all the front mount John Deere mowers in the 1400 and 1500 series ranges.

Also, take note of a problem when I test out how things are functioning…it comes back to bite me when the snow finally arrives. Snow Plowing with a Broken John Deere 60″ Snow Thrower on a JD 1585

I recently made a video of using the JD broom to plow snow and followed it up with another video that had me showing how to change attachments, from the broom to the 60″ snow thrower in preparation for a snow storm that was coming. In this video I used the thrower to handle the slightly deeper snow, between 4-5″. I realized when doing a drone shot that the thrower wasn’t working right and only have the auger was spinning. Take a look and see what is wrong with my snow thrower. Luckily I still had my broom to save the day!

I will be adding another video follow-up with some shots of the broom in deep snow to show how it handles it.

Snow Plowing with the John Deere Broom on the JD 1585

Showing how the JD broom handles deeper snow using my John Deere 1500 series front mount tractor (JD 1585). We received between 4-5 inches of snow and my thrower was broken, so I had to take out the broom to clear the driveway. 4 inches of snowfall is about the max of what the broom can handle in most situations because where you have drifts, and in places like the end of one’s driveway, the snow can be much deeper than the snowfall amount.

When you have more snowfall, you have to take light passes and go over multiple times. Take a look at how well it does, or doesn’t do. Let me know what you think in the comments. I will be getting the thrower out whenever we get a big snowfall again to test if the fixes I performed on it actually worked.

John Deere 60″ Snow Thrower on a JD 1585

It’s fixed! And best of all the fix held up to 10″ of snow. This is a follow-up to two other videos I have on plowing with a broom and plowing with a broken snow thrower on my John Deere 1585. Having two augers working, instead of one, makes a huge difference! Who would have thought?

The JD HD 60″ snow thrower is still much slower than the broom, but it can handle a lot of snow. Best of all the spout lets me place the snow where I want it, throw it over guard rails, and build snow forts for the kids!

The Fun and Fast Way to Snowplow – John Deere 1585

I have a JD 1500 series front mount mower, the 1585 with AWD, that I purchased a snow thrower, 72″ rear discharge mower deck, and a HD 60″ broom with…I find I almost always use the broom for snow removal. The broom allows me to travel at a fast speed but it starts to get overwhelmed if the snow is 4″ deep or more, so, sometimes it requires multiple times out plowing. The broom is gentle on the driveway, but I would not recommend for gravel driveways as it will remove your gravel quickly. As a bonus, the broom is very handy to clear leaves with in the fall. Take a look for yourself and see what you think. If we start getting tons of snow I will put a video up of the snow thrower too.
